Lufthansa Axes 20,000 Summer Flights Due to Jet Fuel Prices as Airlines Warn of Summer Season Holiday Chaos
- Written by: iPMI Global
The Lufthansa Group has announced a strategic optimization of its summer flight schedule across its six primary hubs: Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Brussels, and Rome. Driven by a doubling of jet fuel prices following the outbreak of conflict in Iran and additional burdens from labour disputes, the Group is reducing summer capacity by approximately 20,000 short-haul flights through October. While this represents a decrease of less than one percent in available seat kilometres (ASK), the measure is projected to save over 40,000 metric tons of jet fuel. The strategy involves cancelling unprofitable routes in Frankfurt and Munich while simultaneously expanding offerings in Zurich, Vienna, and Brussels to maintain global connectivity through more efficient long-haul connections.
Strategic Rationale and Economic Drivers
The optimization of the European network is a response to several shifting market conditions and internal strategic goals:
- Fuel Price Volatility: The price of jet fuel has doubled since the start of the Iran conflict. By removing 20,000 flights, the Group aims to mitigate these costs, resulting in a reduction of fuel consumption by more than 40,000 metric tons.
- Profitability Focus: The schedule adjustments specifically target unprofitable short-haul flights previously operated by Lufthansa CityLine.
- Hub Consolidation: The Group is accelerating the strategic consolidation of its hub airlines, which include Lufthansa Airlines, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and ITA Airways.
- Network Efficiency: By consolidating routes, the Group aims to maintain access to its global route network—particularly long-haul connections—while operating significantly more efficiently.
Capacity Adjustments and Hub Impacts
The redistribution of capacity across the Group's six hubs is designed to balance the network and prioritize profitable growth.

Implementation Timeline
- Immediate Adjustments: 120 daily flight cancellations have already been implemented, effective through May 31.
- Medium-term Planning: Revised route planning for the remainder of the summer season will be published in late April or early May.
- Operational Stability: Short-haul optimizations from June onward are intended to ensure schedule stability for the duration of the flight plan period.
Route and Destination Changes
The capacity reduction has resulted in the temporary removal of specific destinations and the consolidation of others through alternative hubs.
Temporary Route Cancellations
At least three destinations have been removed from the current flight schedule from the Frankfurt hub:
- Bydgoszcz, Poland
- Rzeszów, Poland
- Stavanger, Norway
Consolidated Connections
Ten connections are being consolidated within the Group and serviced via alternative hubs:

Resource Management and Supply Security
Despite the reduction in flight volume, the Group is taking proactive steps to ensure operational continuity for the remaining summer timetable:
- Fuel Supply: The Group's jet fuel supply is considered secured for the coming weeks.
- Risk Mitigation: To ensure a stable fuel supply throughout the summer, Lufthansa is employing physical procurement strategies and price hedging.
- Labor Relations: In a related strategic move, Lufthansa City Airlines has reached a collective labour agreement for cockpit and cabin crew with the ver.di union, with a term extending through 2029.
Strategic Integration of ITA Airways
The consolidation efforts include the technical integration of ITA Airways into the Lufthansa Group platform. ITA Airways has switched its app and website to the Group's infrastructure, allowing ITA flights to be flexibly combined with other Lufthansa Group connections to enhance customer value and travel experience.
